At least six senior major-generals have been awaiting the nod of the Pakistan Army Selection Board for their promotion to Lieutenant General to fill in vacant or to-be-vacated slots at some important positions, informed officials told ‘The News’.

Three key positions — Chief of General Staff (CGS), Chief of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) and Army’s Engineer-in-Chief — would be available for new appointments.

The post of Chief of General Staff (CGS) would become vacant after the retirement of Lt Gen Waheed Arshad on Jan 20.

Lt Gen Waheed Arshad, whose father Chaudhry Mohammad Arshad currently holds the office of President Pakistan Democratic Party (PDP) and the 15-party Pakistan Awami Mahaz (PAM), attended the Corps Commanders’ conference on Friday for the last time, as it was his farewell conference. His mother Ms Qudsia Arshad is a highly-respected MNA, representing the PML-N.

Arshad held key positions in the Army including DG Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The post of HIT chief fell vacant on the retirement of Lt. Gen. Ayaz Salim Rana sometime back and so is the case with the vacant position of Engineer-in-Chief.

According to officials, Maj Gen Raza Mohammad, presently working in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), tops the seniority list of two-star generals and stands a fair chance of promotion.

Maj Gen Khawar Hanif, who heads the Doctrine Evaluation Directorate at the GHQ, is second on the seniority list. He has also worked in Washington as Pakistan’s Defence Attaché.

Maj. Gen. Maqsood Ahmed is third on the seniority list, with General Officer Commanding (GOC) Sialkot Maj Gen Zubair Mehmood Hayat fourth on the list.

Vice Chief of General Staff (VCGS) Maj Gen Syed Wajid Hussain is fifth on the list, while GOC Gujranwala Maj Gen Najeebullah Khan is at number six.
